Supreme Court orders wide publicity of Motor Accident Interim Compensation Scheme 2026

The Supreme Court has directed the Union Government to give wide publicity to the Compensation to Victims (Interim Relief) Scheme, 2026, framed under Section 164A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, so that road accident victims know of their right to seek interim compensation. A bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan termed the quietly framed scheme an "unannounced law" and said beneficial legislation is meaningless if the public is unaware of it. The Court also asked the Centre to clarify whether the scheme covers accidents involving uninsured vehicles, as it appears confined to insured vehicles, and to publish it in the Official Gazette. The bench further sought the Centre's response on how it proposes to operationalize the scheme by the next hearing on November 25, 2026.
