Supreme Court flags commercial misuse of live-streamed court hearings in Harshita Grover case
Hearing Harshita Grover v. Union of India & Ors, the Supreme Court on Friday said the misuse of live-streamed court hearings for commercial gain has caused damage to the institution of the judiciary, with Chief Justice of India Surya Kant remarking that one had no idea of the damage caused to Bar and Bench. A Bench also comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to collate suggestions from High Courts and other stakeholders on how to tackle the issue and file a counter-affidavit with proposals. The Court reiterated that its earlier interim order — prohibiting the unauthorised use, circulation and monetisation of live-streamed court proceedings on social media and other digital platforms without prior permission — stands, while clarifying that fair and accurate reporting by recognised news organisations remains unaffected.
