Supreme Court directs States to notify Anti-Human Trafficking Units as police stations

The Supreme Court has directed all States and Union Territories to notify their Anti-Human Trafficking Units as police stations by issuing appropriate notifications through their Home Departments at the earliest. A bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan passed the order during compliance proceedings in Prajwala v. Union of India, reviewing implementation of its May 29, 2026 judgment on trafficking of women and children for commercial sexual exploitation. The Court said police-station status for these units is necessary for its Victim Protection Plan, framed under Article 142, to work on the ground. The Union was asked to take up the issue with all States and UTs and ensure the notifications are issued. The Court also noted four directions on welfare institutions and nodal officers were still not fully complied with and sought a fresh status report, listing the matter next on December 14, 2026.
