Supreme Court asks Sanjay Raut to explain conduct; AG grants consent for contempt case

A Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut's petition in the INDIA bloc's electoral-roll SIR case would be entertained only on a provisional basis until he explains his conduct. Raut had criticised the Chief Justice for declining to meet opposition leaders and claimed judges were seen playing badminton with political leaders in London. Separately, Attorney General R. Venkataramani granted consent for criminal contempt proceedings against Raut and journalist Nikhil Wagle on the Supreme Court Bar Association's plea, and the court issued contempt notices to both, exempting them from personal appearance for now.
