Independent commission of former judges holds first public hearing on SIR voter grievances in Delhi

An independent inquiry commission of former judges constituted by the Lawyers Association for Constitution held its first public hearing on October 15 at Jawahar Bhawan, Delhi, on voters' grievances arising from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The five-member commission, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Madan Lokur — who did not attend this hearing — comprises Justices A K Patnaik, Badar Durrez Ahmed, Rekha Sharma and Anjana Prakash, and will examine the constitutional validity, methods and impact of SIR against the test of whether "an eligible citizen was retained while ineligible entries were properly excluded". Voters, including former West Bengal MP Tarun Mondal whose name was deleted in the state's SIR, gave formally recorded testimonies; the Election Commission was invited to nominate a senior officer to attend, and the final report is expected to be made public by December.
